At the Battle of Waterloo (1815), F Troop Royal Artillery (often known as Captain Henry Lane’s F Troop) was supported by the Corps of Royal Artillery Drivers. These men provided the vital logistics and equine management required to haul the cannons, limbers, and ammunition wagons across the battlefield.
Previously, the British army relied on civilian contractors who were prone to abandoning their posts when the shooting started. To solve this, the Corps of Royal Artillery Drivers was formed in 1793 as a fully militarized unit. At Waterloo, this corps fielded over 2,600 men, with specific detachments assigned to troops like Captain Lane’s, handling the horses under heavy fire.
