Description
William Smith was appointed Ensign in the 91st Foot on 28 June 1810 and was promoted to Lieutenant on 21 July 1813. He served in the Peninsula from October 1812 to April 1814, and was present at the battles of the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive and Toulouse, and also at the battle of Waterloo. He was placed on half-pay, 27 April 1817.
The 91st were ordered to Walcheren where it took part in the campaigns there, 218 men died from fever. They were then sent to the Pyrenees where they suffered 120 men either killed or wounded William being present. Nevelle 125 casualties, Nive 54 casualties, Toulouse 122 casualties so they saw quite a bit of action. The 91st arrived at Waterloo but did not take part in the actual battle occupying the extreme right, they did take part in the advance and occupation of Paris and remained in France until November 1st, 1819. William did not live to claim his 4 clasp Military General Service medal as he is recorded as having died in 1823 (or 1825 its indistinct)
