Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea Awarded for the Rescue of the Crew of Vrouw Jantina Off Wick 9th September 1857
One of 15 bronze medals awarded for this incident ‘Attempting, by means of the lifeboat, manned by volunteers, to rescue the crew of the “Vrouw Jantina” in Wick Bay, during an awful gale on the 9th of Sept., an act performed with extraordinary coolness and gallantry under circumstances of the most imminent peril. Alex Bain, one of the volunteers, was washed overboard and drowned’. A Peter Hossack (sic) is included in the list of the crew involved in this attempt.
