Colour-Sergeant Joseph Gilbert was born on 13 June 1866 and enlisted into the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 13 April 1885. He is known to have reached the rank of Colour-Sergeant by the time of the Great War, with entitlement to a B.W.M.
