Petty Officer 1st Class Bartholomew Murphy was twice mentioned in despatches according to the South African Honours and Awards Lists – being ‘specially recommended’ on two occasions, once by Commander W. L. Grant 28.8 1900 and the second time by Captain John E. Bearcroft 17.3.1901.
Q.S.A.s were awarded to 368 men from H.M.S. Doris: 70 of them with four clasp combinations, 2 men from the ship were awarded 8-clasp Q.S.A.s and 36 7-clasp Q.S.A.s. He served during the Great War, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer, with entitlement to WWI Trio.
Medal and clasps confirmed on the medal roll, it also states that a duplicate medal was awarded to him although the naming style on this medal is the correct style as issued in 1902.
