Description

Born 26.1.1910 in Mansfield, Nottingham. Enlisting 10.4.1928 age 18, he was previously a miner. His service was to be 7 years with the Colours and 5 years on the Reserve. He would have served with the 2nd North Staffords in the U.K. at Blackdown before the move to Gibraltar 1930- 1932, home service at Aldershot was interrupted when they were sent to Palestine in 1936. After a year in which the unit was infrequently in action it returned to Aldershot and was available  for the first of the BEF which crossed to France in 1939. The unit was engaged in fighting when the Germans invaded the Low Countries in 1940 and made its way back to Dunkirk and then England. The AB358 held at the Staffordshire Regimental Museum shows he transferred  to the R.A.O.C. December 1941.
