Description

Killed in Action at Maiwand.

Private Suku Maitur served with the 1st Bombay Grenadiers during the Second Afghan War and is confirmed as having been killed in action at the Battle of Maiwand on 27 July 1880 – as listed in the ‘The Second Afghan War 1878-1880 Casualty Roll’ by Farrington [name listed as 578 Sakoo Maiter]. Upon the disorderly retreat of Jacob’s Rifles, the nearby men of the 1st Bombay Grenadiers, hitherto a seasoned and reliable regiment, were also thrown into confusion in the face of the massed attack of the Afghan tribesmen, and thus suffered heavy casualties.

The 101st at Maiwand lost 360 Officers and men killed, a further 60 wounded.
