Summer 16075Gnr. Alfred171/59 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.

North Africa: This man was an ammunition number and as such engaged in feeding with ammunition the A/A guns during the operations against the Martuba aerodrome on 21st March 1942. One of the rounds misfired and although it was extremely dangerous to do so, he told the number one not to wait for the prescribed safety period as no time must be lost in continuing to engage the enemy. The gun was unloaded and although the fuse was still burning, he carried the shell away to safety where it later exploded. Later he was twice wounded but refused to receive any treatment and carried on with his work supplying the guns with ammunition (Military Medal Recommended) London Gazette 12.5.1942.
