‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. As a battalion scout he carried out many valuable reconnaissance under heavy machine gun and artillery fire. He was invaluable in rallying stragglers and guiding them back to their companies, and in discovering dispositions both of our own and of the enemy’s. Throughout he did very fine service.’

William Anderson enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders and served with the 1st Battalion on the North West Frontier of India in 1908, and subsequently with the 1/5th (Sutherland and Caithness Highland) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 5 May 1915. He was awarded both the D.C.M. and the M.M. whilst employed as a Battalion Scout and was latterly advanced Corporal.
