Frederick William Thake was born in Hackney in 1884 and was awarded the M.S.M. for devotion to duty on the Western Front whilst serving with No. 199 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He later suffered a shell contusion to the right hand on 27 August 1918, medical records stating, ‘fracture metacarpal – ring finger’.
